Description
At ten years of age, as dozens of medically fragile foster and adopted children cycle through her family home, Jennifer is thrust into adulthood far too soon. Burdened with caregiving, extreme parentification, and the quiet devastation of watching siblings and foster children disappear or die, she learns early that survival requires resilience, courage, and the endurance of unspoken grief. Rather than remembering her California childhood through sun-soaked afternoons and carefree days, Jennifer’s memories are marked by abandonment, conditional love, and a persistent sense of unbelonging—one that follows her into adulthood.
But survival is only the beginning. As she grows older, Jennifer begins the difficult work of choosing herself—uncovering long-buried family secrets that illuminate the ache she has carried for years and reveal that she was never as alone as she believed. From this new beginning, determined to break cycles of trauma, she builds a chosen family, pursues education, and creates a life rooted in stability, self-determination, and care.
Raw and unflinching, Mismothered is a powerful story of endurance, identity, and the search for belonging—a testament to the courage it takes to heal invisible wounds and claim a life fully one’s own.
